My "political" posts continue... If you have time, please find from youtube or from nbc.com's website the latest addition from SNL's Sarah Palin series. They made fun of the VP debate and we were laughing our asses off. Tina Fey is doing phenomenal job portraying Sarah Palin and possible is more qualified that she is. It was very enjoyable! I think it's kinda sad that we are enjoying this so much especially considering how important these issues are for me and T personally and for this country as well as others. This seems like the most important presidential election ever.

Things that have ticked me today:
My Doctor not receiving my MRI results yet! It's been week and a half and the results have not yet reached her! Her secretary is hunting them down as we speak...and my Doctor will call me when she gets them.
Doing things that doesn't need to be done by me. If all you need me to do is draw a line over a word and rewrite something else on top of it, why don't you do it yourself?
My laziness. Not giving examples here. Sorry.

Tampere Polytechnic
That's my school, that's where I got my Bachelor's Degree!
Students from TAMK and some civil activists (about 30 women) organized a kissing demonstration outside Aamulehti, the local newspaper in Tampere owned by Alma Media in support of Johanna Korhonen! I LOVE IT!!!

I won't say anything about the VP debate yesterday because it could get ugly and long winded. I suggest you read T's post though. I agree with her.
Since this election isn't and won't be about the environment, I will make one point. Palin went back to energy many times when she didn't know what she was talking about. She talked about her background as a governor of a energy producing state etc. and how she wants to drill oil in Alaska. There is 2 regions in USA that have a significant amount of oil to be drilled. One in the Gulf of Mexico and one in Alaska. The problem with the one in Alaska is that it's in a wildlife refuge which is protected by the law. The fact that there is flora and fauna there that are endangered in an ecologically vulnerable ecosystem is one thing but there is also a law against drilling there! And she wants to get her hands on that oil. Oil is renewable energy...it just takes millions of years to renew it! And it is NOT environmentally friendly. But instead of focusing on solar, wind or hydro energy, she wants oil. But she seems out of touch with a lot of things so it's no wonder.
I have a day off which means catching up with my shows and doing home work. Right now I'm watching the premier of 90210...it's...interesting.

What I've read today
So for the past few days I have been following the firing of Johanna Korhonen from the Finnish newspapers. For those of you who don't know what I'm talking about, here's some background information:
She was chosen to be the chief editor of the newspaper Lapin Kansa (the people of Lapland, newspaper for that region) in August and was fired in September. She was supposed to start at the job in mid-December. Lapin Kansa is a part of a bigger newspaper group Alma Media, the biggest in Finland, and the CEO Kai Telanne fired her for lack of trust. He's saying she was lying to them from the beginning and didn't give all the relevant information. She's saying she was fired because she's a lesbian and is living with her partner in a registered relationship, in other words, is married to her. For the past few days they have been going back and forth with who said what, who did what, and what are the real reasons behind her being fired. The Newspaper group is still talking about lack of trust. and her not disclosing all information. She's saying she was fired after they found out she's married to a woman. Now I learned her partner is a candidate at the local municipal election and is not part of the party that the newspaper usually supports.
I just read an interview by Heikki Tuomi-Nikula, the chief editor of the newspaper (the one she was supposed to succeed) in which he said that it would be very difficult for the chief editor to be a out-lesbian and do the job well since whatever is printed in the newspaper will be a reflection of her living situation. and how it's not just the newspaper but she's representing the whole region. It would be OK to be a closeted lesbian/gay, but being out is not a good thing. He also said that the people who chose her to be the chief editor made a mistake in the first place. The CEO of Alma Media says that Tuomi-Nikula's comment does not represent the opinion of the group.
then I read an article how this was talked about in the Finnish house of representatives today. The Finnish government disapproves.
Johanna Korhonen also said that she was offered 100000 euros for not going public with the firing.
Then I read that the staff at the newspaper wants Kai Telanne to resign! So clearly, as far as the staff is concern, there's no lack of trust between the staff and Johanna Korhonen! So HOW can they say that?!?! Sounds to me like there's some heavy political homophobia going on in the newspaper group. I'm saddened that this is going on in Finland in such a high level group. But in the same time, I'm happy to hear that in such a remote and north place as Lapland there are people who are willing to stick up for you and who are accepting. I hope this will end up well for Johanna Korhonen. Can't be easy being in her shoes right now.

T was right. I did not post the month so...it's in MARCH 2009! Marianne and Elviira, get ready! No trips to Spain, no trips to who-knows-where! Save a date from that period of time...and Elviira, if you want to make blueberry pie, you absolutely CAN! I tried making it here and even though it was OK, it wasn't yours...they don't have a key ingredient (maitorahka vai kermaviili) here so I had to use plain Greek yogurt. T was looking at it and said that doesn't look like a pie cuz here they are all pretty and fluffy and this looked like someone puked on it but once she tasted it she liked it. Or so I was told...she might have been a little suspicious because some of my other attempts to bake have been...hhhmmm, how should I put it? Not so successful. I learned from my mistakes though. I know what I did wrong. But it is hard here when you don't have the whole variety of products Valio makes. You can definitely appreciate the easiness of cooking in Finland with Valio's products when they're not at your disposal anymore.How this became about cooking and baking, I have no idea.

Going to Finland!
Those of you who didn't see T's post today...WE ARE GOING TO FINLAND!!! It's not happening anytime soon but we decided that since the time was right and the tickets were cheap, well relatively cheap, we wanted to go.
When, you ask? We will arrive on Sunday the 15th and leave the following Saturday. That'll give us plenty of time to explore Finland, Helsinki, Tampere and a Stockholm cruise included!
Why this time you ask? Well, it's my spring break and possibly the last time I have the time before (hopefully) starting to work here and then who knows when I have vacations anymore. My graduation is in May and after that I hope to start working as soon as possible. This will give enough time for T to accumulate vacation time too and save money to bring home a whole collection of Iittala glass wear and Finnish chocolate. She LOVES Iittala and Fazer's dark thin chocolate!
So that's our good news!

The Closer
I'm at home chillin with the cats, Sox has taken over the love seat and Bailey is on top of the cushions on the other watching the Closer with me. I'm trying to watch the recordings so that there will be more room to DVR my fave shows. Right now I'm watching the Closer, starring Kyra Sedgwick and it's hilarious. For a cop show it's awesome. I LOVE cop shows but this is one of the bestest. Kyra plays a Deputy Chief in the LA Police Squad and handles all kinds of crimes. She's from Atlanta and is like a southern Belle, always on a good behaviour but also ready to break the rules when it suits her. And there's always a twist in the end. When you think it's gonna go one way it goes the other. I'm totally in love with this show! I know my description doesn't say much, so you're just gonna have to watch it yourself. Kyra Sedgwick is awesome!
